What is Easter?

As children, if we were lucky enough we all got a visit from the Easter bunny. Easter morning was a time spent hunting for eggs that we colored the night before and opening our easter baskets only to devour the Cadbury eggs and bunny ears as quickly as we could.

As adults we probably watched the Josh Hartnett movie 40 days and 40 nights where he gives up his carnal pleasure for Lent, and I am sure if you looked at Facebook during the Lenten season you would see many statuses saying things like "I'm giving up alcohol for lent!" or "I am giving up sweets for lent!" It was amusing to read my friend Nikky Williams sentiment about those statuses and the things people were giving up - #willgethotforJesus. :D

In the midst of the chocolate bunnies, adorable Easter dresses, and bad habits your friends give up for 40 days, somehow the meaning may get lost for some people. You may find yourself asking yourself questions like "What is Easter? What is Lent? Why is Good Friday good - isn't every Friday great? Can I get hot for Jesus?"

Well peeps (Easter pun intended) - this is for you! I am so excited to tell you about Jesus and the meaning behind this season! Here is a rundown of all of the important holidays:

Fat Tuesday - so much more than that hot spot where you can get frozen drinks in fun plastic cups y'all! This is the last day you can indulge in all the things you are giving up. Better enjoy those sweets and alcoholic drinks because you have a long 40 days ahead of you!

Ash Wednesday - The beginning of Lent.

Why 40 days? Jesus spent 40 days fasting and praying in the desert between Jerusalem and Jericho and was also tempted by Satan there as well. These 40 days replicate (in a very minor way) Jesus' time in the desert. Just HOW did Satan tempt Jesus? It was something like "Hey man, if you're hungry you could totally turn those rocks into bread. You should get on that. No? If you jump from that temple the angels will save you! You got this bro! Ah ok still no?" Then Satan pulled a total Lion King and said "Look at this land - everything the light touches can be yours if you want it!" Jesus - being the most standup guy to ever exist said 'You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.' And Satan left - SEE YA NEVER! Matthew, Mark, and Luke all wrote about this in their books in the New Testament if you want more info. It is HISTORY - fun fact, the Bible is the most read, most widely circulated book OF ALL TIME. Its the GOAT guys.

Palm Sunday - this event marks Jesus return to Jerusalem where people celebrated his return by waving - yep - Palm branches.

Maundy Thursday - The last supper happened on this day. Jesus broke bread and drank wine with his "friends" even though he said Judas would betray him, Peter would deny him, and he would be crucified in the next few days. He knew all these things were to come and they did. You find out who your friends are when the times get tough, and they could not have gotten any worse for him.

Good Friday - not so great, saddest, toughest, worst day ever. This was when Jesus was crucified and hung on the cross. Why is it good? I have my own idea that it is good because this had to happen so that we all could get to heaven one day. He did this for YOU. He did this for ME. He did this for everyone because he LOVES us. What happened? See below, get out the tissues, and beware because it is GRAPHIC.

Easter Sunday - HE IS RISEN. After he was crucified, they wrapped his body in a shroud and put him in a tomb and sealed the tomb with a large stone. This day they went to check and the stone was rolled away and Jesus was gone! His friends were all mourning and suddenly Jesus appeared and nonchalantly asked what was troubling them - good one Jesus! After proving he was really there, they rejoiced and Jesus left and ascended to Heaven to be with God.

Can you believe it? It HAPPENED. If you do not believe, I encourage you to do research on the books and who wrote them and when and why. It is fascinating, if not from a religious standpoint you will enjoy the historical standpoint.

In all seriousness, I want to tell you that JESUS LOVES YOU. He died for your sins and wants you to feel His love by asking him in to your heart. If you do not know Jesus and want to - feel free to reach me at strollersandstilettosblog@gmail.com and I will be glad to share this good news with you.

Much love and many blessings during this holy week!
